The athletic training students at Colgate University serve as an invaluable resource to the professional staff. The students, with their dedication and many hours of hard work, help to provide the highest quality of care for our student-athletes. The majority of our athletic training students begin their experience in the training room as freshmen or sophomores. Their initial mission is to observe and interact with the professional staff and other students in order to make themselves both knowledgeable and comfortable with the procedures set forth by the Sports Medicine staff. They are given opportunities to interact with coaches and players, to evaluate and treat injuries and to travel. The experiences gained as part of the Sports Medicine staff are ones that will be with them for many years after graduation.

The student staff is continually educated as they work.  The professional staff periodically conducts presentations to keep the students current and expose them to new aspect of the job.  All student assistants receive handbooks to keep with them while working to serve as a reference to help them through situations that may arise.

After completing their individual observation time, the athletic training student is then either given a team with which they will work more specifically, or given other duties within the clinic. The athletic training student's placement is up to the discretion of the professional staff based on performance, enthusiasm, and compatibility with the assigned area. There is no emphasis put on any sport or athletic training student position at Colgate. Every individual sport has it's own inherent needs based on the number of athletes within that sport, injury rates, and travel. The current student staff is excellent. They have proven that they are an invaluable asset to Colgate Sports Medicine.
