NEW OR REVISED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

ENGL 309A: Fiction--Language of the Lower Frequencies
Taking a cue from Ellison’s closure to Invisible Man, we will examine the ways in which texts created by people of African descent innovate, transform, subvert and/or play with the boundaries of genres in dominant Anglo culture(s). We will explore what cultural, social and historical contexts slot particular works into the mainstreams or margins of popular and alternative cultures. Our explorations will involve many perplexing issues that don’t have clear-cut answers, including: the contexts that connect cultural traits to ethnicity and racial oppression (what is Blackness, Whiteness, Otherness?); the validity of oral culture in literary culture; gender identity and empowerment issues in the presentation of African-American narratives. Students will write several brief response papers, give presentations, and engage one extended research paper. Although our primary focus will be on literary texts, we will explore the texts of many other genres: oral, aural, visual and movement-based. Among other writers we will study, traditional folktales, Ralph Ellison, Zora Neale Hurston, Jeam Toomer, Toni Cade Bambara, James Alan McPherson, Gayle Jones, James Baldwin, Shay Youngblood, and Aaron Magruder.

ENGL 342A: Modernism: Race, Gender, Genre

A course that takes the relationship between formally experimental literature and the cultural contexts of the first few decades of the twentieth century as a jumping off point for literary study. We will closely read a variety of modern texts to discover how these writers experimented with the form and genre of modern narrative to convey the complex intersections of race and gender in modern identity. Writers may include Djuna Barnes, Samuel Beckett, T.S. Eliot, E.M. Forster, James Joyce, Mina Loy, Nella Larsen, Dorothy Richardson, Jean Rhys, Gertrude Stein, Jean Toomer, Virginia Woolf, and Louis Zukofsky.

ENGL 350B: Practicum--Theater Workshops
Semester-long series of 2-4 weeks workshops under the guidance of master teachers, extraordinary artistic personalities of national and international reputation from various theatre fields: students will have the opportunity to experience Shakespeare on stage, clowning, mime, acting technique, comic improvisation, directing, etc. This course will be continued in the Spring semester by English 350 C Theatre Workshops. Permission required.

GERM 101C: Beginning German I
GERM 101C is a special section of Beginning German, open only to students with no previous background in German who have excelled in another foreign language (including first-year students). Enrollment is only possible with prior permission of the department Chair, Claire Baldwin; students who are interested in this section or who are unsure of which section to choose should contact her at cmbaldwin@mail.colgate.edu. This section will meet only 3 days a week, but will include extra, required independent work and will move at the same pace and be on the same exam schedule as the regular 4-day a week sections (sections A and B).

POSC 472:  Seminar:  War, Diplomacy & Peacemaking
The course aims at better understanding of the phenomenon of international conflicts and wars as well as of their ending by peaceful means. The course begins with a review of the theoretical literature explaining the causes of war and the conditions determining the forms and patterns of their management and settlement. This process is particularly complex in cases of shifting from protracted conflict to diplomacy, stabilization of coexistence and peace in domestic, regional and international contexts. This part includes a critical approach to theories of ripeness, international mediation and incentives; cultural gaps and social and psychological obstacles in the process of conflict settlement/resolution. The second part of the course examines the case of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the life-long American involvement in an effort to bring about its settlement. This part assumes a regional approach which examines the ability of individual Arab and Muslim states to act autonomously of supra-state pan-Arab and pan-Islamic ideologies.

PHED 116A: Night Club Dancing (2 units)
The characteristic rhythms of Salsa, Swing, Hustle, Nightclub Two-Step, Samba and Argentine Tango create an exciting foundation where a diversity of cultures intermingle on the dance floor. Studying the correct technique enables one to achieve maximum joy of movement and body expression. The patterns internalized in this course will give you the confidence to dance throughout the world. No partner required.

PHED 138A: Ultimate Frisbee (1 unit)
This course will provide an introduction to the sport of Ultimate Frisbee.  It will cover the rules of the game, as well as the importance of good sporting behavior in a sport where players call their own fouls.  The classes will focus on teaching and developing the skills of throwing, catching, cutting, and defending.
