Colgate Salvage Operations

Mission Statement:

The Salvage program is designed to provide a cost effective, timely and efficient process to reallocate resources within the University, and for disposing of surplus/unwanted goods at the highest practical rate of return to departments and the University.

Procedures

Departments should contact the Coordinator of Salvage Operations when surplus office furniture or supplies become available for salvage. The Coordinator will arrange for the pickup of all items on a timely basis.

Surplus items will be evaluated and the department credited for the salvage value (determined by actual market value minus moving, advertising, repair costs, etc.). The exception is, on specialized items, to delay departmental credit until the items are sold to determine what the market will bring.

A list is maintained (6 month basis) of surplus requests by Colgate departments. Departments will be contacted if any goods requested become available. Departments also have priority to purchase sale items during the first week after a general sale notice is published. After this period, the sale is open to departments, employees, and the general public on a sealed bid basis.

Salvage sales are conducted in the Fall each year on a sealed bid basis. Bid sale announcements are published in local advertising distributions and are distributed on campus two weeks before the bids are due, with times announced for general review of sale items. Items are sold to the highest bidder on a "cash & carry" basis. Bid deadlines and pick up times are strictly enforced. Applicable sales tax or a tax exempt certificate is required on all sales.

General requests to purchase salvage items between regularly scheduled sales may also be submitted to the Coordinator of Salvage Operations. These requests will be evaluated based on the availability of storage space in Salvage, with consideration given to handling costs and related expenses. Items of a specialty, custom or unique nature, and select "one of a kind" items will be sold only through the bid process. Items for direct sale including dorm furniture and computers will be advertised in local papers at market price.  Large quantity purchases may qualify for a  10% discount.
