About Colgate

Colgate's 515-acre campus is situated on a hillside in the upper reaches of the Chenango Valley in central New York State. It is often described as one of the most beautiful colleges in the country. Hamilton, with a population of 2,500, is a residential village with historic homes, a college inn, shops, a village green, and tree-lined streets. The cities of Utica and Syra-cuse are each within an hour's drive.
Colgate University is a highly selective liberal arts institution with 2,700 students. With an 11 to 1 student-to-faculty ratio, classes average 19 students.
Close contact with faculty and staff and individual attention offer students a challenging academic environment in which to learn and grow. Most students participate in independent studies and research projects where they develop critical thinking abilities, learn to synthesize information, build strong communication skills, and acquire problem-solving  techniques. Colgate students  also develop strong leadership skills through participation in more than 100 student organizations. Student athletes compete in 25 intercollegiate
sports at the NCAA Division I

"Colgate is a change, but I like it a lot. Everyone is kind and I've met a lot of people I wouldn't have otherwise. I'm majoring in mathematics and I love the department. I'm also involved with intramural sports playing, reffing, and helping to organize programs. My basic thing is, I want to make the competition better. If you have a good enough idea, there are people here who help you get it done."

level, as well as in club and intramural sports and a number of recreational activities.
Each year Colgate faculty members lead semester-long study groups off campus at foreign and domestic sites chosen for their contrasts in culture or their location near centers of specialized activity. In addition, Colgate fosters a thriving summer program in which undergraduates engage in scholarly research with professors from all divisions.
Colgate has long been committed to increasing diversity in its enrollment. In the fall of 2000, ALANA students represented 15 percent of the total student body, and 13.6 percent of the first-year class.

"With close, family-type relationships, helpful professors, and smaller classes, there is an easy environment to learn in here. I was attracted to Colgate's diversity and the activities for ethnic groups. That Colgate is an excellent school with Division I athletics was very important to me. It is difficult but exciting, with a chance to compete and go to the tournament. There's always help available. I love my professors; they are so down to earth. They are here for me."
