DISABILITY STUDIES FILM SERIES
Persson Hall Auditorium, 7:00 p.m. "Sound and Fury": Monday, September 23 Produced by Roger Weisberg, Directed by Josh Aronson. We open the Disability Studies Film Series with the Academy Award nominated documentary, "Sound and Fury". If you could make your deaf child hear, would you? "Sound and Fury" follows the intimate, heart-rending tale of the Artinians, an extended family with deaf and hearing members across three generations. Together, they confront a technological device that can help deaf people to hear, but may also loosen their bonds with each other and threaten deaf culture -- a robust culture united by a uniquely visual and artistic language. This film makes it clear that there are no easy answers. It focuses on the choices we make and the battles we fight in order to be acknowledged and understood.
"The Tic Code": Monday, October 7Starring Gregory Hines, Polly Draper, and Christopher George Marquette This feature-length film portrays Miles, a 12-year-old piano prodigy with Tourette syndrome. Set against the sights and sounds of the Greenwich Village jazz scene, "The Tic Code" is the story of three people who come to accept that, even though life doesn't always deal you a fair hand, you learn to play with the one you've got. This movie features cameos by jazz greats Dick Berk, John B. Williams, and Carlos McKinney. The music sets the mood for this story about three people breaking free to find themselves by discovering each other.
