Working With The Elderly and Disabled

Madison Lane Apartments
We unite Colgate students with members of the senior community in Hamilton by creating a conversational atmosphere on Friday afternoons.  Bingo is the game of choice, and there's always plenty of banana pie to go around!  Contact Elena for more information.

Hamilton Manor
Hamilton Manor (previously called Hubbardsville Manor) is a low-income residential care unit for individuals with
developmental disabilities and the elderly.  Volunteers visit with residents once a week for one hour.  Residents enjoy reading books, playing games and socializing with the students.  Students schedule the days and the times they would like to visit via the student coordinators.  Colgate volunteers are the ONLY volunteers that some of these residents receive, so the companionship we bring is very important!  Contact COVE for more information.

ECU (Adopt-A-Grandparent)
The Adopt-A-Grandparent program is for students who want to help the elderly in need.  In the ECU (Extended Care Unit) associated with Hamilton Hospital, there are many people who cannot live on their own and are looking for companionship.  They need a friend to listen, to play cards or bingo with, or to go for a walk.  We are starting up a bowling league for the residents, and a special chute for bowlers with handicaps has been ordered.  The league will officially begin in the fall.  The hours are flexible, however a weekly commitment is expected.  Contact COVE for more information.

Best Buddies
The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with mental retardation by providing the opportunity for one-on-one friendship and integrated employment.  Members of Best Buddies develop a friendship with a person with mental retardation in the Hamilton community.  Best Buddies are asked to talk to their buddy once a week, see them every other week, and attend group events with them.  Those looking for less commitment will not be paired with a buddy, but can attend group events.  Best Buddies is a national organization, and Colgate's chapter was recently officially recognized as such.  Contact COVE for more information.
