Tutoring Programs
Colgate's Promise
College Prep Program
This program, currently under
design, will open the doors of possibility to economically disadvantaged
youth. Mentors will cover topics like goal setting, SAT preparation,
college searches, financial aid, and application tips. Contact

Hamilton
Elementary and Secondary Tutoring
Colgate students provide roughly
one hour of tutoring a week to children between the levels of kindergarten
and twelfth grade. The student tutors provide instruction on an
individualized and/or small group basis working in coordination with
teaching. The available hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,
Monday through Friday. Contact

Madison
Central School Tutoring
This tutoring program works with junior high and senior
high school students at Madison Central School. Colgate students
help with homework in addition to being
a friend. Tutoring is offered in a controlled, comfortable and
exciting environment for kids who unfortunately may not always be exposed
to this setting. Contact

Madison
Group Home
Volunteers at the Madison Group
Home interact with at-risk youth (between the ages of 12-18) in academic
and social activities. The minimum time commitment is 1 1/2 hours
per week in an evening tutoring session (Sunday - Thursday), and frequent
weekend and evening social events. Contact

North
Broad Street Tutoring (Homework Club)
This is a program in which
Colgate students both mentor and tutor 4th and 5th graders two days a
week. Students of North Broad Street come from low-income homes and
need assistance in this after-school program. The time commitment is
only two hours, but the impact could last a lifetime. Contact

The Stockbridge Tutoring Program
The Stockbridge Tutoring program will supply weekly opportunities for
Colgate students to tutor students of late middle school and high school
age. Tutoring embodies academic interventions and after-school
review activities. The focus is basic mathematics (i.e., early
algebra, geometry, etc.). Tutoring sessions occur Monday through
Thursday from 2:45 to 4:00 p.m. Contact

The Stockbridge Pre-K
& Pre-School Program The purpose of this program is to provide a supportive, stimulating
environment where students are encouraged to think for themselves, to
observe, to question, to explore and to discover. Pre-K specializes
in preparations for kindergarten, while Pre-School provides a special
classroom environment for special needs children. Colgate students
will help out in the classroom and encourage the children by building
their independence and improving their group behavior. Contact

Utica Tutoring Program
Those interested in helping impoverished inner city children, ages 6-16,
can volunteer at one of three Utica sites: The Boys & Girls Club
of Utica, The Thea Bowman Center, and The JCTOC. Transportation will
be available. This program requires one free afternoon a week.

Programs that Serve Children
Green
Earth Gang
As part of the Green Earth Gang,
groups of Colgate students teach environmental science lessons to 2nd and
4th grade classrooms in Hamilton and Madison elementary schools. No
prior science knowledge is required! Classes are taught once a week,
every other week. Contact

Headstart
Headstart is a national federally
funded program that supports the positive growth of low-income
children. Although programs vary, most approved applicants receive
some healthcare benefits and schooling. Colgate's Headstart is a volunteer organization geared to present these children
with positive role models. Colgate volunteers attend the Headstart
classrooms at Memorial Park Elementary School in Waterville for one hour
once a week. Volunteers will interact with the preschoolers and
participate in activities like playtime, reading and general help within
the classrooms. Contact

HOG (Hamilton Middle
School Outdoor Group)
HOG is a group of outdoor and child
enthusiasts dedicated to sharing our outdoor experience with 6th-8th
grade children. Our
activities are centered on giving the kids a fun experience, with the
opportunity to experience the outdoors in a positive and safe environment.
We make all efforts to incorporate educational environmental games,
and give the students outdoor skills and an environmental ethic, but the
main focus is on FUN! We are also aiming to unite Colgate’s Outdoor Education
program with the local community as well as other Colgate students and
volunteer programs. Contact

Liberty Kids
Liberty Kids is a new program that provides children, ages 5-8, with the
opportunity to meet weekly with a group of Colgate students in the
Hamilton Public Library for a fun time of group reading and one-on-one
reading and mentoring time. The children are recommended to the program
by Hamilton Central School based on need. The name of the program points
to the sense of freedom that being a confident reader evokes in a child.

Science Outreach
Science can be fun! Field trips and
experiments outside the school with 2nd through 5th graders focuses on
science with an emphasis on experiential learning. Extensive

Sidekicks
Sidekicks is a mentoring program, which offers an opportunity to develop a friendship between a
Colgate student and a child of the Hamilton community. Children
range in age from 5 to 11. Colgate students are asked to interact
with their child at least once a week for a one hour period. Contact
