Hamilton Elementary and Secondary Tutoring
Colgate students provide roughly one hour of tutoring a week to children between the levels of kindergarten and twelfth grade.  The student tutors provide instruction on an individualized and/or small group basis working in coordination with teaching.  The available hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Contact COVEl for more information.

Madison Central School Tutoring
This tutoring program works with junior high and senior

Madison Group Home
Volunteers at the Madison Group Home interact with at-risk youth (between the ages of 12-18) in academic and social activities.  The minimum time commitment is 1 1/2 hours per week in an evening tutoring session (Sunday - Thursday), and frequent weekend and evening social events.  Contact COVE for more information.

North Broad Street Tutoring (Homework Club)
This is a program in which Colgate students both mentor and tutor 4th and 5th graders two days a week.  Students of North Broad Street come from low-income homes and need assistance in this after-school program.  The time commitment is only two hours, but the impact could last a lifetime.  Contact COVE for more information.

The Stockbridge Tutoring Program
The Stockbridge Tutoring program will supply weekly opportunities for Colgate students to tutor students of late middle school and high school age.  Tutoring embodies academic interventions and after-school review activities.  The focus is basic mathematics (i.e., early algebra, geometry, etc.).  Tutoring sessions occur Monday through Thursday from 2:45 to 4:00 p.m.  Contact COVE for more information.

The Stockbridge Pre-K & Pre-School Program                 The purpose of this program is to provide a supportive, stimulating environment where students are encouraged to think for themselves, to observe, to question, to explore and to discover.  Pre-K specializes in preparations for kindergarten, while Pre-School provides a special classroom environment for special needs children.  Colgate students will help out in the classroom and encourage the children by building their independence and improving their group behavior.  Contact COVE for more information or check out their website!.

Utica Tutoring Program                                                            Those interested in helping impoverished inner city children, ages 6-16, can volunteer at one of three Utica sites:  The Boys & Girls Club of Utica, The Thea Bowman Center, and The JCTOC.  Transportation will be available.  This program requires one free afternoon a week.  Contact COVE for more information.

Other Programs that Serve Children

Green Earth Gang
As part of the Green Earth Gang, groups of Colgate students teach environmental science lessons to 2nd and 4th grade classrooms in Hamilton and Madison elementary schools.  No prior science knowledge is required!  Classes are taught once a week, every other week.  Contact COVE for more information.

Headstart
Headstart is a national federally funded program that supports the positive growth of low-income children.  Although programs vary, most approved applicants receive some healthcare benefits and schooling.  Colgate's Headstart is a volunteer organization geared to present these children with positive role models.  Colgate volunteers attend the Headstart classrooms at Memorial Park Elementary School in Waterville for one hour once a week.  Volunteers will interact with the preschoolers and participate in activities like playtime, reading and general help within the classrooms.  Contact  COVE for more information.

HOG (Hamilton Middle School Outdoor Group)
HOG is a group of outdoor and child enthusiasts dedicated to sharing our outdoor experience with 6th-8th grade children.  Our activities are centered on giving the kids a fun experience, with the opportunity to experience the outdoors in a positive and safe environment.  We make all efforts to incorporate educational environmental games, and give the students outdoor skills and an environmental ethic, but the main focus is on FUN!  We are also aiming to unite Colgate’s Outdoor Education program with the local community as well as other Colgate students and volunteer programs. Contact COVE for more information.

Liberty Kids                                                                             Liberty Kids is a new program that provides children, ages 5-8, with the opportunity to meet weekly with a group of Colgate students in the Hamilton Public Library for a fun time of group reading and one-on-one reading and mentoring time.  The children are recommended to the program by Hamilton Central School based on need.  The name of the program points to the sense of freedom that being a confident reader evokes in a child.  Contact COVE for more information.

Science Outreach
Science can be fun!  Field trips and experiments outside the school with 2nd through 5th graders focuses on science with an emphasis on experiential learning.  Extensive experience with science is not necessary.  Contact the COVE for more information.
