Program under re-development

Utica Field School was not offered in the summer of 2004, but we hope to make it available in 2005.  During the summer of 2002, the COVE launched the Utica Field School, a paid summer internship experience.  Past students have interned in a variety of nearby agencies from The Boys & Girls Club of Utica, to Sculpture Space, to Mohawk Valley Center for Refugees.  The group met weekly to discuss their work, experiences and how Colgate could continue to contribute to community building efforts in Utica.

The Utica Field School has several goals, among them:

  • providing students with a rewarding summer experience;

  • making a significant contribution to a Utica based non-profit organization;

  • and contributing to the Central New York region

In past summers, ten Colgate students designed and carried out research projects under the guidance of Colgate faculty mentors and representatives of non-profit agencies.

Approximately 75 percent of the student's time was devoted to the research project; 25 percent was spent doing more typical internship work, allowing the student to learn something about the everyday workings of non-profit agencies. A weekly seminar brought students together on campus to consider issues of community service and social change.

Deadline: The applications are due in February
