Social Justice Learning Community

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Stillman HallThis program is designed for students who are interested in the study and practice of social justice. Students from all class years will participate in this program and engage in programs and activities focused on issues of diversity and equity, community building, service, and civic engagement. Drawing on these ideals, the Social Justice Learning Community takes on a leadership role bringing about positive social change on campus and in the Central New York region.

Students who chose to participate in the Social Justice Learning Community will live in East Stillman hall, a co-educational suite-style building.  Program participants will have special opportunities early in the year to joint a variety of student groups that work on social justice issues. They will also work closely with residents of Bunche Peace Studies House. A variety faculty members and administrators serve as liaisons and work closely with the students to develop a social justice action plan for the year. Students will have the chance to enroll in a special of a two-credit PE course called “Isms of Society” in the second half of the fall semester that deals primarily with stereotypes and issues of diversity and equity in society. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in either Contemporary Issues and Values (PHRE 101) or a special section of Introduction to Sociology.

Harlem Renaissance Center (HRC)Bryan Complex

The Harlem Renaissance Center (HRC) is a living and learning center designed for students interested in the culture and heritage of Africans/African Americans.  HRC residents, both first year and upper-class students, participate in a wide variety of activities and assist in the planning of Nia Gatherings.  Nia Gatherings invite all Colgate students to learn about African American history as well as broader issues associated with diversity at Colgate and beyond.  HRC residents often collaborate with organizations such as Brothers, Sisters of the Round Table (SORT), the African American Student Associate (AASA), and Urban Theater in planning campus events.

Because HRC offers students the unique opportunity to explore non-Western traditions outside the classroom, HRC is open to and welcomes all students.  The community is indeed one that is comprised of students who come from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.  Residents of HRC often develop strong links with the students living in other college and special interest housing such as LaCasa Pan Latina-America, Asia Interest House, Bunche Peace Studies House, and the Social Justice Learning Community.

The Loj (formerly Eco House)

Formerly Eco[logy] House, The Loj will be a house for students interested in outdoor education and recreation, environmental studies and engaging in the Hamilton community.  It is named after the Adirondack Loj in the Adirondack Park.

Science and Technology

Still TBA.  The RAs are Computer Science and Molecular Bio majors.  Possible housing for this program would be in Gate House, with the additional possibility of linking the residents to an FSEM.

Check out the articles in the Maroon News about next year's community-focused residential opportunities.
