Social Justice Organizations
  • Progressive Student Network
The network encompasses all student groups involved in political, cultural and ecological issues.  Contact Bob or Amanda for more information.
  • Democracy Matters
Democracy Matters is a national organization that works with college students on efforts to strengthen democracy in the United States. We focus on the issue of money and politics in America-and on the promise and passage of campaign finance reform. Through Democracy Matters, students are given a voice in the movement for campaign finance reform, an opportunity to make democracy matter, and an entrée into lifelong civic engagement.
Democracy Matters was founded by students and faculty at Colgate in the fall of 2000. There are now Democracy Matters groups in five states. Interested students should contact Brandy or check out the national website.
  • Coalition for a Better World
An outreach program begun through ALANA, Coalition for a Better World plans events and programs to promote diversity and engage the campus community. Each month the coalition holds an open house planned around a theme, including topics such as poverty and health, ALANA awareness and the environment. "We are a group that helps to educate the campus about cultural issues," says one member. "We want people, and more varied people, to come to the center."
  • College Democrats
The purpose of the College Democrats is to stimulate student political thought and active interest in governmental affairs, to support and promote the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party of the United States, and foster a diversity of ideas on campus through open debates, speakers, and social activities. More specifically, we make our national legislative priorities known by bringing in speakers, establishing communication between professors and students regarding political issues, interacting with the Democratic Party on the local level, and by keeping in contact with our home representatives in government.

  • College Republicans
The Colgate chapter of College Republicans is dedicated to furthering the ideals of individual liberty as articulated by the conservative principles in the Republican Party platform. Colgate College Republicans take an active role in political discussion on campus, as well as in political campaigns and activities on the local, state and national level.  Feel free to email them!
  • Students for Environmental Awareness
  • The goal of Colgate's Students for Environmental Action (S.E.A.) is to lead the Colgate community in creating for itself a healthy and livable future based on a sustainable relationship with our natural environment. This goal will be reached through immediate action to educate the community about the impact of humanity on the environment, on the problems these effects pose to us, and the measures we can take to remedy this situation.  Contact Ellen Frank for more information.
  • Colgate International Community
  • Students for Social Justice                               Students for Social Justice (SSJ) is a student led group working to promote awareness and action around issues of social justice. With an agenda that bends to the particular concerns of the members, the group aims to openly promote and forward a just and peaceful global, national, and local society through awareness campaigns. These efforts often include petitioning, leafleting, sponsoring speakers, actions on the quad, and organizing trips to protests that allow SSJ to become part of larger, national, and global movement. An emphasis is placed on using creative means to mobilize the minds and actions of the Colgate community towards a socially just world. Contact Michael Carrington for more information.
