Text Box: TALK, ROCK, and VOTE!
Colgate is holding a regional Presidential Election awareness event on October 16th. Why do you support your candidate – because of his party or his platforms? The media often skirts the real issues. Come learn what these politicians actually stand for. Political groups from multiple colleges will attend in order to share ideas and to network with other chapters, thus expediting individual group accomplishment. The regionalism of this event will not only allow us to reach a greater number of students, it will also allow us to show the nation the significance of college students as a political force.
Features of this event include:
·  Debate between aides from each presidential election campaign paired with knowledgeable students
·  Speakers from Democracy Matters, the SUNYs, and NYPIRG discussing campaign finance reform, voter disenfranchisement, and the importance of college students' votes, respectively
·  Debate between local incumbent congressman, John McHugh of the 23rd District, and his challenger, Bob Johnson
·  Networking and idea sharing between political-interest groups from different schools
·  Concert with the band State Radio, starring former lead singer of Dispatch. Attendees of the debate will get in free!
Text Box:                     Team Leader Retreat Puts New COVE Vision into Action
A major focus for the COVE this year is to make sure community-building directives are thorough and organized. A priority is training team leaders to effectively direct their teams. The Team Leader Retreat took place on September 11, 2004. Held at Camp Fiver, a local summer camp dedicated to providing one-on-one mentorship for disadvantaged children, the retreat congregated 20 team leaders along with COVE interns and three administrative staffers—Betsy Busche, Julie Dudrick, and Kelly Nash. The team leaders participated in workshops and learned how to establish action plans that would well serve their missions.
In addition to preliminary training for team leaders, the COVE is also dedicated to the proficiency of its team members. Kelly Nash is the school-based program coordinator at the COVE and will train and mentor all members participating in tutoring and child-care programs.
The COVE hopes that through close contact with staff, team leaders and members will have the know-how to perform as best they can in order to truly and effectively make a difference in the community.
