 Service Through Education Project (STEP)

STEP is a student initiated course that demonstrates interest, motivation, and creativity on the part of the students.  Groups of 3-5 students must develop a proposal including the following elements.

  1. Course title and cursory description of course concept(s).
  2. Educational Objectives.
  3. Service Objectives.
  4. Extent to which the service component is essential to the educational/conceptual aspect.
  5. Course Bibliography (containing a minimum of 10 sources) and Syllabus.
  6. Detailed explanation of individual expectations and contributions.
  7. Additional comments.
After developing such a proposal students should then seek a faculty sponsor with the help of the/a STEP administrator.  The STEP administrator will provide students with necessary contacts and resources in securing a sponsor.  This administrator will weigh the merits of the proposal and approve or deny it accordingly.

Grading of the STEP course ultimately relies on collaboration between the students, faculty sponsor, and STEP administrator.  All STEP courses should, however, require each student to write a research paper of no less than 15 pages regarding his/her project.  Additionally a reflection paper of no less than 5 pages should also be required to explain the significance that the STEP course had for the particular student.

STEP courses should meet at least once weekly for the duration of the semester to maintain close contact between the participants (and the faculty sponsor as necessary).  During such meetings, participants should discuss readings, plan service activities, and reflect on the course. Colgate course credit may be granted through the sponsoring department or in whatever manner the students, faculty, and administration.

How can I be a part of it?
