Counseling can be very helpful to most people. To fully benefit from counseling, you need to play an active role in the process. Attending your appointments is obviously the first step. Calling to cancel when you cant make an appointment is greatly appreciated. When you come to your sessions, your ability to talk about what is bothering you as openly and honestly as you can will have a direct effect on how much you get out of counseling. You may be asked to think about something in a new way or to try something a little different. You are by no means expected to follow every suggestion made by your counselor, but the ideas of your counselor could lead to improvement in your situation and it would be beneficial to consider them. Finally, when its appropriate and you feel comfortable, your counselor would welcome feedback about how you think things are improving, and you may be asked about this from time to time. As you can see, your role in counseling is to be active in working with your counselor to resolve the issues that concern you. | ||||||
