Counseling is the process of discussing difficulties and exploring possible solutions with someone who is a trained mental health professional. Counseling is having the opportunity to say things you wouldnt tell most people, sharing private feelings, and taking the time to work on concerns you have. This can happen in either individual or group therapy. Sometimes you may share feelings that are painful, but you wont be expected to go into those feelings anymore than you want to. Your input about what to discuss and how comfortable you are with certain topics is an essential aspect of counseling. You may do some of these things with friends and family members to varying degrees, but counseling with someone at the Counseling & Psychological Services office at Colgate is different. Youll be meeting with a caring person who is trained specifically to help you with your concerns, and who will maintain strict confidentiality (for limits to confidentiality see the "Services" link). A professional can offer new ways of approaching your problems, and give you feedback that you might not otherwise receive. These are some of the characteristics of counseling that can make the process both unique and helpful. | ||||||
