In American culture, recognizing perfectionism can sometimes be difficult since we live in a competitive society focused on doing our “best” and constantly looking for ways to better all aspects of ourselves. The media constantly tell us we aren’t good enough, or that even if we’re doing fine there is always something to improve. We see ads for cosmetics, diet products, fashions to hide personal “flaws” as well as things such as tape series to “get the vocabulary of a Harvard grad in just 7 days”, or books on how to “win friends and influence people”. So with all the self-improvement products and programs out there how do we know when we’re good enough? Sometimes it’s tough to recognize that we are OK as we are, and to know the difference between challenging ourselves to achieve healthy goals and setting unrealistic standards that are difficult if not impossible to achieve.
