College students
may have a difficult time deciding whether or not they are having a
problem with alcohol or other drugs. Most college environments support a
drinking culture, which tends to distort an individual’s awareness of
one’s own substance use. It might seem as if everyone is using. Indeed
friends might also be having chemically related problems. It is very
important to sort out what could be just a run of bad luck and what is a
substance abuse problem.
The staff at Conant House can provide a confidential setting in which a
student can explore his/her use of mood altering chemicals. The counselor
can provide support as a student takes an honest look at the choices that
he/she is making. The task of sorting out low-risk and high-risk drinking
practices is a process that involves taking a realistic view at the
choices that one is making. Of course, the ultimate decision about making
changes rests totally in the hands of the student.
Sometimes students may choose to drop in to simply ask a few of questions
about alcohol or other drugs. With their questions answered, they are out
the door never returning to Conant House. Others may choose to have a
substance abuse evaluation that will allow them a more in-depth and
personal view of their use. Individuals who decide to work on their issues
may choose to participate in individual and/or group counseling.
Educational opportunities in the form of tutorials and alcohol education
are available throughout the semester.
