Different people have different ideas about what "sexual assault" means. For some, a completed rape is the only thing that qualifies; for others it’s any kind of unwanted sexual contact (anything from a kiss to being fondled). At Colgate, sexual misconduct is defined as "sexual contact with another person…when such conduct is achieved through physical force, coercion, deception, or threat, or in situations in which the victim is physically helpless by reason of drug or alcohol consumption, sleep, or unconsciousness" (from the 1999-2001 Colgate Student Handbook). That definition is similar to what most institutions use to define sexual assault. So, how much does it really happen? | |||
