| Sexual assault is
reportedly the most rapidly growing violent crime in America, claiming a victim every 45
seconds. The following are statistics taken
from a 1985 study done by Mary P. Koss of Kent State University:
more than 25% of college women had been the
victims of rape or attempted rape
1 out of 8 female students had been raped,
according to the legal definition, in the year previous to the study
90% of the women knew their attackers
47% of the rapes were by first dates or romantic
acquaintances
over 90% of the women did not report the rape
1 out of 12 men admitted to having satisfied the
prevailing definition of rape or attempted rape; however, none identified himself as a
rapist
Colgate University Statistics:
an average of 3 sexual offenses are reported each
year at Colgate University (based on 1992- 1998 reports)
given the national finding that only 16% of rapes
are reported, it can be estimated that close to 20 sexual assaults occur to female
students each year while theyre on campus (which is only 7 ½ months of the year)
Its important to remember that many
instances of sexual assault and rape go unreported, so its difficult to know the
actual numbers. It happens a lot, and it doesnt have to. |
