MINIMUM DRINKING AGE  DISCUSSION

Drinking ages were raised  in response to the National Minimum Purchase Act  that Congress approved in 1984. Each state was encouraged to raise their minimum drinking age to 21. If states did not do this they would lose portions of the funding that they receive from the Federal government for highway maintenance and development.
