Hazard Communication Plan

G. Contractor Policy

Contracted employees on campus who could be exposed to hazardous chemicals as a result of their work on campus must also be familiar with Colgate's Hazardous Communication Program and the necessary precautions to take while working on campus.

G1. Persons Responsible for Supplying Information to Contractors.

The liaison between Buildings and Grounds and the contractor (The Assistant Director for Construction, the Director of the Physical Plant, or the Assistant Director of the Physical Plant) will determine if contractors working on campus may be exposed to hazardous chemicals located on campus as a result of their work on campus.

G2. Information.

Outside contractors working on campus will be provided with all necessary information concerning the potential hazards of the substances to which they may be exposed, and appropriate protective measures required to minimize exposure as well as emergency and hazardous waste removal procedures. For major projects, information will be disseminated during the start up meeting and will involve the Contractor and/or representative, the Director and/or Assistant Director of the Physical Plant, the Assistant Director of Construction, the Director of Campus Safety, the Assistant Director of Fire Safety, and the Hazard Communication Coordinator. For smaller projects, the information will be conveyed by whatever means the liaison deems appropriate.

All outside contractors will make available a list of hazardous chemicals and Material Safety Data Sheets for the hazardous chemicals that their employees bring on to Colgate University's property.

In addition, no hazardous materials will be introduced into the workplace by vendors, sales people, frequenters, or employees without an MSDS presented to the appropriate department head or supervisor.

G3. Procedures for Documentation.

Contracts, meeting minutes, and other written documents will be used to verify that the contractor or representative received all necessary hazard communication information and that they understand Colgate's policies and procedures regarding hazardous chemicals.
