The high hazardness of some chemicals demands that special handling and disposal techniques be used. Before beginning any laboratory operation, the supervisor or instructor must review MSDSs or LCSSs for each chemical that they are unfamiliar with to determine precautions and waste disposal implications and methods.
All purchases of radioactive materials must be approved by Colgate University's Radiation Safety Officer. In addition, there are procedures for ordering and receiving packages of radioactive materials. Anyone using radioactive materials must be under the direct supervision of someone on the Colgate University radioactive materials user license. Use of radioactive materials must be in accordance with Colgate's License and the New York State Department of Health Guide 10.2, Rev. 1, April 1989.
I2. Hazardous Chemicals
All chemical purchases go through the Environmental Health and Safety Office and are reviewed by the CHO. The purchase and use of carcinogens, reproductive hazards, explosive, and highly toxic chemicals must be closely coordinated with the CHO. See Section J on Particularly Hazardous Substances and Section C on Chemical Inventory Management for further information.
Anyone planning an operation that will generate an acute hazardous waste (see Appendix D) must consult the CHO before beginning to confirm that we have the ability to ensure proper storage and disposal. See also Section M on Hazardous Waste Management.
