H1. General
Employee information and training will occur initially during a new employees orientation period. Information and training will be refreshed by department as needed with a formal training session at least biennially. Training and information distribution is a continuous process. Laboratory supervisors must ensure that everyone working or studying under them has been adequately trained on the chemicals, equipment, and procedures that they are using. Emergency procedures and equipment must not be overlooked. See also Section B on Responsibilities.
H2. Information.
All laboratory personnel will be informed of the contents of "Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories ," OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1450, and the location and contents of Colgate University's Chemical Hygiene Plan.
All laboratory personnel will be informed of the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) and ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs). A listing of OSHA PELs is located in Appendix B.
Additional information and training will be available upon request. Reference material is available to employees through the Environmental Health and Safety Office, SB-4 McGregory Hall.
H3. Training.
Training will consist of methods and observations that may be used to detect the presence or release of a hazardous chemical, the physical and health hazardous of chemicals in the work area, the measures employees can take to protect themselves from exposure, including engineering controls, personal protective equipment, work practices, and emergency procedures. Training will cover Colgate's Chemical Hygiene Plan and Hazardous Waste Management Procedures.
