Doctors and
Medical Staff Should Be Aware of the Following:
- Latinos in America do not tend
to visit their physicians frequently. On average they
visit their physician about once every six months (Servants,
5).
- Latinos tend to have a family
physician with whom they make appointments and they do not
tend to seek second opinions.
- The Hispanic mother usually
does not have a preference for a physician based on race or
sex.
- Hispanics who do tend to have
a preference are usually older, widowed, or are college
graduates, and they tend to prefer a male Hispanic physician
(Moreno, 436).
- Hispanic parents often do not
bring their children to a physician because of poverty and
lack of health insurance.
- Hispanic parents may not bring
their children to a physician due to lack of transportation.
- Long waiting-lines may cause
them to leave.
- Secretaries who do not speak
Spanish may discourage them from making an appointment.
