· The health status of Bosnians is not
very different from that of non-refugee Americans. However, many
Bosnian refugees have war injuries (gunshots, burns) resulting
from the Bosnian war (1992-1995).
· Many Bosnian refugees have high blood
pressure (Dolores Gulowski, St. Elizabeth's medical staff member).
· Bosnian refugees are not inflicted with
cancer or AIDS any more or less then an average American.
· Many Bosnian refugees do not understand
the necessity of immunizations (Dolores Gulowski).
· Many Bosnian refugees complain about
headaches; this is often due to post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD). However, according to Dolores Gulowski,
"Many refugees are afraid to say they have a mental
problem because they fear they will be deported from the United
States."
