African Americans
practice the three main monotheistic religions, as well as Eastern
and African religions. The predominant faith is Christian, the
second largest group of believers accept the ancestral religions
of Africa – Vodun, Santeria, Myal – and a third group of
followers practice Islam. Judaism and Buddhism are also practiced
by some people within the community.
Health Care and Religion

A large number of African Americans believe that health and
happiness is connected to living a life that is pleasing to god.
Many African Americans have strong ties with the church and will
wish to have visitors and the minister of the church visit and
offer prayers for recovery. There is a strong belief in the
healing powers of god.
