Using Interpreters
The interpreter checklist is a set of questions
health care providers should consider when using an interpreter.
- Be aware that an appointment
using an interpreter may be longer than normal?
- Have you thought about the gender, ethnicity or dialect of the interpreter,
because certain combinations may be inappropriate and inefficient to the best healthcare.
- It may be beneficial to meet with the interpreter prior to the appointment.
- Avoid long and complex sentences, as well as slang or sarcasm, so the messages
may be translated accurately.
- Be aware of any nonverbal communication, which may indicate the patient's
sensitivity to a topic.
- Be sure to look at the patient, despite the interpreter, and speak in the first
person.
