These questions address issues the areas of cross-cultural communication, including language barriers, which can often impede the delivery of appropriate healthcare. 

  • What is the patient's preferred language?

  • Do you understand what the patient believes is causing the problem?

  • Has the patient clarified he/she family's role in medical decisions?

  • Are you aware of any available support from the patient's own cultural community that might help (i.e. religious connections, leaders, friends)?

  • Does the patient understand the diagnosis and the proper use of treatments?

  • Is the patient using other alternative treatments?

  • Does the patient agree with the final plan of treatment?
