Rebels, Runaways, and Researchers: Routes to Freedom in Central New York
Symbols of a Journey
On Tuesday, February 6, 2001, the ALANA Cultural Center at Colgate University proudly hosted the opening of a permanent exhibit of carved faces discovered in the basement of a church in Syracuse, New York, which was part of the Underground Railroad. The gala opening, entitled, "Rebels, Runaways, and Researchers : Routes to Freedom in Central New York," was a celebration of Colgate University's acceptance of the faces and highlighted the history of the abolitionist movement. The picture above was taken after the unveiling of the faces at the ALANA Cultural Center on exhibition night. The showing of the faces coincides with the Center's and the University's effort to inform people about the legacy of Central New York's contribution to the pursuit of human rights. |
