Transfer
Admission
Admission to Colgate with advanced standing is possible twice during the calendar year through three different programs: transfer student, visiting student, and special student. Students interested in applying under one of these programs should consider carefully the characteristics of each. These frequently asked questions address the common concerns that arise during the transfer application process and provide a strong foundation for your search. What are the application deadlines and fees? If you have special questions, please contact: Leslie Ann Zulch (transfer
applicants with last names A to K) Susan Dolly Lathrop
(transfer applicants with last names L to Z) Ph: (315) 228-7401 Application Deadlines and Fees Spring transfer applications should be postmarked by November 1. How does Colgate define a transfer student, visiting student and special student? Colgate defines a transfer student as any student who has matriculated in a college-level degree program, is a high school graduate, and wishes to attend a different institution. Most successful transfer applicants have achieved a grade point average at or above the 3.0 (B) grade level during their previous college experience. The average GPA for admitted transfer students is 3.5. Students enrolled in their first semester of college who wish to transfer to Colgate in the spring term will be considered on a very selective basis. Transfer admission relies on the record of college level work, and first semester students usually cannot present a transcript for such work in time for an admission review. Students with outstanding high school records and excellent Progress Grade Reports for the fall term, however, will be considered for spring transfer in the first year. The Visiting Student Program allows students from other colleges to attend Colgate on a temporary basis. Visiting students are limited to one term of enrollment at Colgate. A special student opportunity is limited to a few area residents who, for personal reasons, wish enroll for one term and/or less than a full course load. Do I follow the same application procedure if I applied before? Students who previously applied for first-year admission are welcome to apply for transfer admission by obtaining the Application for Transfer, Visiting, and Special Students and completing the entire packet. The Office of Admission retains application materials from the last two academic years and will refer to previous application data during the transfer review process. Standardized test scores do not need to be forwarded if they were submitted with the first year application. We ask that applicants who have applied for transfer admission within the last two years send a letter of intent indicating their desire to reactivate the transfer application. To reactivate a transfer application, the transfer committee requires an updated transcript, application fee, revised essays, and current recommendations. Transfer applicants who applied over two years ago must complete a new application. Does Colgate accept the Common Application for transfer admission? Transfer students are strongly encouraged to complete the Application for Transfer, Visiting, and Special Students when they apply for admission. If a common application is submitted, a supplementary packet, containing additional essay questions and other pertinent data, will be forwarded to you to complete. What type of financial aid is available to transfer applicants? Transfer students anticipating a need for help with financing their education should be certain to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Financial Aid PROFILE by March 15 when applying for fall entrance. In addition, transfer students entering in January should have the current school send a Financial Aid Transcript to Colgates Office of Admission, even if aid is not being given. For additional information please see the Office of Financial Aid. Applications for admission and financial assistance are not considered complete until
all required financial aid forms are received by the Office of Admission. What is the total cost for the academic year?
Transfer credit will normally be granted for liberal arts courses bearing the equivalent of three semester or five quarter hours worth of credit when the student earns grades of C or better. Grades of C- or lower are not granted credit. A student can transfer a maximum of 16 Colgate equivalent courses to Colgate. At Colgate, one course carries one course credit, which is equivalent to four semester hours. The following defines academic standing and required Colgate credits to achieve the listed standing:
What support services are available to transfer students? Transfer applicants benefit from many administrative and faculty resources. The transfer administrative advisor coordinates the orientation program and academic standard issues. The academic advisor, a faculty member in a students concentration, consults with the student to develop educational goals and plans. In addition, the residential advisor provides support in dealing with student life issues. What type of extracurricular opportunities exist at Colgate? Students are involved in more than 100 clubs and organizations ranging from a full concert orchestra to a campus radio station, from the College Republicans and Democrats to six a capella singing groups. In addition, Colgate fields 25 mens and womens Division 1 varsity teams, over 20 competitive club teams, and also sponsors approximately 23 intramural sports. The Colgate Activities Board sponsors concerts, comedians, speakers, movies, and much more. With all of these options available, approximately 95% of the student body remains on campus during the weekends. For further information on the extracurricular options at Colgate, please visit the Campus Life homepage. Will I be able to live on campus? Do I have a choice of where I would like to live? Colgate students live on campus through their sophomore year. In their junior year, students may live on campus, or, if applicable, in their fraternity/sorority house. In their senior year, students may live on campus, or in a Greek house or be eligible through the off-campus Residential Life lottery to be one of 250 seniors permitted to live off campus. How do I obtain a Colgate application for Transfer, Visiting, and Special Students? If you wish to pursue your interest in Colgate, please complete and return immediately the online "Request for Application Material." The transfer application and brochure is typically distributed in early fall. Or, download the 2003-2004 transfer application here.
