| Deferred Entrance While
most students apply for admission with the intention of entering college the following fall, some
accepted applicants may wish to postpone entrance to Colgate for a period of
time.
Accepted applicants who do not matriculate at another institution may ask
to postpone their enrollment for up to two semesters or
one year after the date of initial expected enrollment. Such a request
should be made in writing to the Office of Admission by May 1 of the year application was made,
and must be accompanied by the non-refundable $500 enrollment deposit. This
deposit will hold the student's place in the class he or she wishes to enter.
Applicants who do not pay the $500 deposit and who do not matriculate at
another institution, or who defer their entrance for more than two semesters, must
formally reapply for
admission.
Students applying for financial assistance must file the Financial Aid
PROFILE with the College Scholarship Service (CSS) and the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the federal processor by February 1 of the year of intended fall enrollment.
Candidates may expect notification of financial aid awards by early April of
the spring before entrance.
Admission by Transfer
Students Interested in Transfer Admission should download the
Application for Admission for
Transfer, Visiting, and Special Students, as well as the
Colgate
Instructions for transfer applicants and the transfer student
supplement linked below. Students may also request an
application from
the Admission Office.
Students can also print the following individual forms to be filled out
by their attending college or university:
Definition of Transfer Student: Any student who has matriculated in a college-level
degree program, is a high school graduate, and wishes to attend a different institution.
The deadline for applying for the spring term is November 1, the deadline for the
fall term is March 15.
Students who are enrolled in their first semester of college who wish to transfer to
Colgate in the spring term will be considered on a very selective basis. Transfer
admission relies on the record of college level work and first semester students usually
cannot present a transcript for such work in time for an admission review. Students with
outstanding high school records and excellent Progress Reports for the fall term, however,
will be considered for spring transfer in the first year.
Visiting Student Program
Students from other colleges may apply to spend one term at Colgate or
participate in a Colgate off-campus study group. To spend a term at Colgate,
please read the Colgate instructions for visiting and special students and
submit the
Application for Transfer, Visiting and Special Students with transcripts of secondary school and
college work, dean or advisor report, faculty report, application fee, and standardized
test results. To participate in a Colgate off-campus study program, students must contact
the Director of Off-Campus Study, who coordinates admission to the groups.
Office of Undergraduate Studies/
Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) &
Science/Mathematics Initiative (SMI)
The Office of Undergraduate Studies
(OUS) is a center for academic assistance for students from historically
underrepresented backgrounds at Colgate. OUS provides special programs and a variety of
learning resources that can contribute significantly to a student's intellectual
development and successful transition to Colgate. Services include academic assessment and
counseling, professional and peer tutoring, course-based study groups, and assistance with
reading, writing, and study skills.
Special OUS programs include a pre-first-year summer session that assists selected
students with the transition from secondary school to college-level work. During the
summer session students complete credit-bearing courses in writing, the humanities or
social sciences, science/math, and physical education.
The Science/Mathematics Initiative (SMI), a program jointly administered by OUS
and the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, aims to increase the representation
of students of color in the sciences. Distinctive features include a pre-first-year
summer session and nine-week summer research apprenticeships for sophomores.
Eligibility for these programs is determined at the time of admission; separate
application is not required. For more information about OUS services contact the OUS
office. For information about admission through OUS/HEOP or SMI contact the
Office of Admission. |
